The Green League 2008

People and Planet has finalised the new criteria for the Green league 2008, which will be published in the Times Higher Education Supplement on 22nd May.

It aims to promote transparency of information and encourage senior decision makers to push environmental standards up across the sector.

First Pilot Institutions to be Awarded Silver
Bath Spa University became the first Pilot institution to receive the Silver EcoCampus Award.

The EcoCampus Director, Dr. Peter Redfern, presented the award to Bath Spa's Vice Chancellor, Professor Frank Morgan.

Pilot Institutions to be Awarded Bronze

EcoCampus can now announce that the following Pilot Institutions have been awarded Bronze for having successfully completed the first phase of the EcoCampus EMS:

  • University of Hertfordshire

Another pilot institution is in the process of being awarded Bronze.

HEFCE Strategic Review of Sustainable Development in Higher Education in England

HEFCE published in January 2008 their strategic review of sustainable development in HE in England. This report measures a baseline of sustainable development activity in the higher education sector. It also allows HEFCE to learn from institutions' experiences about the conditions for embedding sustainable development, including barriers and drivers. To download the report, please click here.

People & Planet's Go Green Week 16 - 24 February 2008

People & Planet are launching the National Go Green Week, which will be the UK's first national student week of action and events against climate chaos. For more information please click here.
As part of this initiative, students are encouraged to ask their VCs or Principals to sign the Green Education Declaration. This calls for a strong Climate Change Bill that commits to at least 80% cuts in CO2 by 2050.

HEFCE and Salix launch fund to reduce greenhouse gases

Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in England will benefit from a new fund to provide repayable grants for projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This fund will be a partnership between HEFCE and Salix Finance Ltd. It is expected that there will be a combined total of around £30 - 40 million to distribute over the three years from 2008. Green Gown Awards 2007-2008

The Green Gown Awards offers recognition for best practice in universities and colleges. Submission for this year's awards should be completed by the 5th December 2007. For more information and to download the application form please click here.

October 18th, 2006 - EcoCampus Scheme Workshop

On the 18th October 2006 the first EcoCampus workshop took place at Nottingham Trent University. The participating pilots from across Engalnd were welcomed to Nottingham Trent University by Pro-Vice Chancellor and Head of College, Science and Technology at Nottingham Trent, Professor Yvonne Barnett. Director of EcoCampus, Dr. Peter Redfern stated that "EcoCampus offers a real solution for institutions looking to improve their environmental and sustainable development performance. It brings structure and a systematic approach to the whole process."

Harriet Waters, Environmental Co-Ordinator, Oxford Brookes stated " Attending the first EcoCampus session was a real eye opener - I came away with a much better understanding of the whole process. January 9th, 2006 - Ecocampus Launch Event

The launch event for EcoCampus took place at the University of Gloucestershire. The joint seminar co-hosted by EAUC and HEEPI focused on improving environmental performance through management systems. EcoCampus representative Dr Peter Redfern addressed the audience highlighting the virtuous of environmental management systems (EMS) and how EcoCampus can help institutions fulfil their environmental targets through introducing an incremental approach to EMS
